We knew we had a good thing in 2008, but it just keeps on getting better! PARKSALE 2009 was an overwhelming success with 75 vendors participating from a variety of art and design backgrounds. The second annual student and independent artist sale saw over 850 visitors pass through on another beautiful sunny day (no deals with rainmakers had to be made!). 6 legal walls were decorated with graffiti throughout the afternoon while everyone in hearing distance enjoyed the relaxed beats of Night Panda.

An impressive variety of artisian goods were there to be seen and enjoyed such as original paintings, prints, photos, home-made toys, comic books, sculptures, jewellery, graffiti and a cooking magazine, not to mention some of Alberta’s hottest fashion designers. The relationships established through the original PARKSALE continue to flourish, with designers like Calgary’s very own Caitlin Power, Lethbridge’s Shelly Court and Brenda Low and Calgary’s Paradime Clothing and Colour Design representing both at the PARKSHOW Spring 09 fashion/art event and at PARKSALE 2009. Now that some of these designers have been seen on the likes of Alberta Fashion Week’s runways, and artists have gone on to gallery showings, PARKSALE 2009 proved an exciting time for local culture fans to get to know and chat with these talented folks our city has to offer.

A special thanks is in order to everyone that helped make this event possible: the University of Calgary for providing us with the lovely outdoor space, Night Panda for assisting with the sound equipment and keeping the atmosphere going with their awesome tunes, Mark Ollinger and Light and Soul Apparel for showing off their live graffiti artistry, West Coast Digital Print and Copy for their printing contributions and all of the vendors and visitors who came out to support the event! We’d also like to thank ARTLIFE Gallery for helping us with PARKSHOW and our fundraising efforts, without their help we would not have been able to host PARKSALE 2009.

PARKSALE 2009 was proof that it is a community effort to redefine culture, and we are so glad that we have this opportunity to connect artists and creatives with the people of our fine city.

The 2008 Calgary PARKSALE was the perfect start to summer. With beautiful weather, amazing vendors, a great location and lots of interested visitors, not to mention some sweet sharing of arts and design, the first ever PARKSALE set a stellar precedent. Hundreds of people of all ages turned out to enjoy a groovy afternoon of culture and artwork produced by Calgary’s young adults.

Artists sold their paintings, prints, photos, sculptures, comic books, vintage clothes, t-shirts, recycled clothing designs and many other types of art in various media, all in their own individualized spaces. On top of that, DJs spun some perfect afternoon tunes, and the legal walls were filled many times over with a fascinating flow of graffiti art.

We want to thank everyone who helped put this event together, the University of Calgary for providing us a perfectly beautiful and interesting space for us to hold the PARKSALE, Jeremy at Color Design for hooking us up with our limited-edition t-shirts (a few still available!), all the vendors who participated and everyone who made the right decision and came out to check us out. See you next year!
