Arrata Opera Centre

Dressing up, unveiling, and putting on a real SHOW - these are the concepts that intertwined to make up the fabric of PARKSHOW Spring/Summer 2011. Revealing thrilling new fashion and art from local independent designers and creatives, our fourth PARKSHOW was inspired by the mystique of 1930's burlesque, and was a true celebration of the artists and designers who are weaving new history into the fabric of our city's culture.

Wanting to create a refuge of culture and style amidst the doldrums of lingering winter, we took a cue from the tantalizing spectacles of the past by thrilling our sold-out audience at the Arrata Opera house with an exciting line-up of performances and intriguing art designs. Ian Ketaku opened the show with his spoken word, proving to be like the best MCs in vaudeville with his own contemporary twist. Then, giving the crowd a taste of vintage delight, burlesque dancer Lacey Taylor set hearts a-flutter with the classic burlesque fan dance, and set the tone for a decadent showing of the latest collections from Apiana Que, Chantel Traub, KARA, Emogene Couture, MaNoKin Design, Light and Soul Apparel, Madame Wolf and NRT Designs.

Over 475 guests attended throughout the night, watching fashion framed on a dramatic runway that encorporated the Opera Centre's classic organ, and afterwards, they mingled through our curated art show "fabrik- the essential structure of everything." Each local artist gave their own interpretation to what defined fabrik for them and their constructive answers were a testament to the multiple threads of work and tight-knit concepts that make up the fabric of our culture in Calgary. By combining new material and ideas, with classic spaces and the thriving creativity that is there to be uncovered here, there will always be something thrilling to enjoy in our city. Celebrating this joie de vivre, our guests were dancing to the spun tunes of DJs Night Panda 'til the end of the night.

PARKSHOW 2010 REVIEW

Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre

One of the best things about putting together our PARK events is the opportunity we have to play: with venues, themes, new ideas, designs and works of art- and with the supportive people who love culture in Calgary. Play is also a part of how we are always evolving as an organization, always working to bring new ways for the community to share in our excitement about the creative talent our city has to offer. So, for our third PARKSHOW we decided to roll with that sense of play and transform our beautiful venue, The Chinese Cultural Centre, into our very own dollhouse.

Decked out with dolled up models in their own dollhouse showcases, the central hall of the Centre filled up with 515 guests who saw a musical performance from the beautifully voiced Lauren Mann, a stellar appearance by our friends DangerKat and a runway show featuring incredible local designers. Under the ornate ceiling of the centre, the latest collections from Peeko Apparel, Hoakon/Helga, Madame Wolf, Hanmade, Colour Design, Emogene Couture, KARA, Beatrix, Split Pea Vintage, Light and Soul Apparel and Broken Ghost Couture walked down a runway viewable from 360 degrees, while Night Panda spun the beats. The night was truly a kid's dream done up grownup style.

PARKSHOW FALL 2009 REVIEW

Saturday September 12, 2009
Arrata Opera Centre

We put on our first PARKSHOW last spring in order to help us raise the funds to do what has always been our foremost goal: giving local artists and designers an opportunity to share their work with the community. But with the amount of people who showed up to enjoy a night of style, art and busting a move we realized this event was something awesome in its own right.

So, we upped the ante for Fall 2009 with an even bigger PARKSHOW at Calgary’s Arrata Opera Centre, bringing the dark and moody glamour of the silent film era onto the catwalk. The truly unique setting of a former church was packed with Calgary’s fine and fashionable who were treated not only to the hot designs of local fashion designers, but the amazingly clever spoken word stylings of MC Ian Ketaku, a special performance by Dangerkat, art and handcrafts by some of Calgary’s superb young artists and a sample sale featuring many of the designs right off the runway, while DJs Night Panda and DJ AC played to a hype crowd on the dance floor.

The inspiration might have been silent films, but the experience of PARKSHOW Fall 09 spoke loud and clear of how Calgarians can turn out to enjoy culture, style, and a good time. We are absolutely full of gratitude to everyone who came to check it out, volunteered, participated, and helped us make it happen again, and inspire us to keep redefining culture wherever we can.

PARKSHOW SPRING 2009 REVIEW

Saturday March 14, 2009
Art Life Gallery

To keep PARKSALE a free event, we decided to put together an energetic showcase of work from past and future vendors to raise money for this year's sale. PARKSHOW was born and became a surprising success!

On March 14, 2009, talented artists, photographers and designers showcased their work at Artlife Gallery and put on an outstanding art show, displaying a preview of what is to come as this year’s PARKSALE. Later on in the evening, guests were treated to a full blown fashion show, complete with dolled-up models, charismatic hosts and local fashion designers and companies. To get the party started, the Geekie dance crew gave a hype performance, and definitely set the tone for the rest of the night.

The evening turned out to an astounding event overall – the show sold out and the gallery hit capacity quickly after doors opened! Thank you to all who came out to party and support the PARKSALE organization. Needless to say it was a huge success and we are now able to fund PARK SALE 2009. We can’t wait to see you all at the next one!
