PARK and Kingsway Mall are thrilled to announce the unveiling of CHROMA – a lively expression of local culture, featuring original artwork from several Alberta creatives. The various installations located around the mall are now home to an array of innovative displays that range from multi-dimensional, to interactive, to thought-provoking in nature. Each contributing artist has been inspired to create their own take on the colourful vibrancy behind the name of the installation. Edmontonians can expect to be captivated by the highly visual journey they will be taken on with each visit to CHROMA.

Like similar exhibits that are growing in popularity across North America, CHROMA will offer an immersive experience by bringing together a unique collection of energetic, larger-than-life artwork created by local talent. The installations will reside at the mall for a six-week period, and we invite all Edmontonians to come explore the photo-friendly display and get to know some of the province’s most gifted artists!

RHYS FARRELL

— “Oplandia”
— My paintings are constructed through the process of layering geometric shapes and pattern. The key element of shapes, colours and lines come together to express my interest in optical painting and color relationships. Having a variety of these elements layering over and under each other create the final image. Colour and its variance allows me to indicate an optical presence. When different and specific colours are placed together and presented through opaque, flat geometric shapes, the colours are activated by one another, inducing the experience of colour sensations. Shape contributes to creating the structure. The play between foreground and background can be manipulated to reinforce the perception of depth and layering. Shape also works as a container of color. Through this combination of formal elements, my paintings embody a configuration or a collection of parts. This idea shows us that my paintings act as a whole or system. This work only achieves the desired optical and sensory effects when all the elements are present.

Tyler Lemermeyer

— “Knit Bricks (10717)”
— In designing this lego wall and vinyl flooring I took inspiration from the patterning of a holiday sweater. I wanted to create a design that could be used outside the holiday season, as this display will live on after Santa departs for the North Pole. I achieved this by using a winter like colour palette, and avoiding specific holiday motifs. The design of the floor decal and the pattern of the lego wall is also meant to naturally draw you towards it with its shapes which point towards the centre of the wall.

Michelle Hoogveld

— “Oplandia”
— Emphasizing the interplay between shape and form, my artwork draws upon combinations of geometric abstraction, expressive brush strokes and figuration. As bold patterns emerge from textile-like blockings of colour, layers weave and fold together as an intricate tapestry of who we are - here, there, then and now. Painting on canvas and walls, I am inspired by people, culture, design and matters of the heart. Experimenting with techniques of mark making, washes, large brush strokes and spray, I seek ways to translate colour into emotion, considering the relationship between place, experience and the significance of connection.
