Chinook Blast’s inaugural festival was such a success in 2021 that they’ve brought it back for a second year, and we’ve partnered up with them again to bring a bit of colour and fun to Calgary’s winter. We’re filling the city with fun, colourful installations, once again spotlighting the work of local artists and creators.

The colourful creations will be free to the public to enjoy throughout the entire four weeks of the festival, providing a unique experience for all ages in the dark winter months. With the displays divided into five components across the downtown core and East Village, pedestrians will have plenty of opportunities to snap an Instagram-worthy photo while discovering various locations around the city.

PARK would like to thank Mark Wood with CP Wood Gallery for making this year’s installations possible.

Delreé Dumont

  • As Indigenous people, we understand that there is a tremendous responsibility when we create our art.”

As a proud Nêhiyaw-Iskwêw with close ties to her Métis roots, Delree Dumont takes this responsibility seriously. Frequently incorporating elements and teachings from her experience as in Indigenous woman into her artwork, her pieces often reflect her connection to Mother Earth consisting of wildlife and anything to do with the natural world.

While this installation maintains her connection to the earth with scenes showcasing mountains and chinook winds, it is a departure from her usual signature style of pointillism, instead experimenting with a laser cut wood display that allows for natural light and shadows to play a key role in its presentation. Being named Saskanôtin, the Cree word for “Chinook Wind”, the installation represents these winds that come from four directions as per the Medicine Wheel teachings - body, spirit, heart, and mind.

  • February 4th - 6th, 2022

An avalanche of colors and cascading balloons, you can catch Ava Arch along the Nordic Track. After your cool photo opp, a ski loop is in order. Because?! There is no avalanche warning at all!

Foxglove Studio

  • February 18th - 21st, 2022

(Greek god of the West wind)

Foxglove Studio is a creative floral studio that uses fresh flowers as a medium of artistic expression. Zephyr is a multimedia installation inspired by the symbolism of wind and the Greek God of the same name. Zephyr personifies a gentle westerly breeze; powerful and invisible with a strong influence on material elements. Using the art of floral design to convey a message from the wind, this piece, which appears in space unexpectedly, can be interpreted as a symbol of moving spirit, the vital breath of the universe, or a gentle whisper from the gods. A breezy message of gentle transformation, serenity and encouragement.

  • Warm, sunny hues and cool, icy blues come together to represent our city’s changing seasons. Frosty undulating waves pull warmth in like the warm winds that are so familiar to us during our winter season. Plunge is about change.

Plunging into uncharted territory is something we have done many times during the Covid-19 pandemic. As our seasons change, so do we. Dipping temperatures are followed by days that feel like spring. This reminds us that even at the most frigid times, something new and bright is on the horizon.

Calgary Party 50

Sophisticated circles warm the eye and pops of balloons welcome you to take cold snaps (no pun intended!) Visit the eye candy at the library, take a whirl and remember to revel front and back!

  • February 25th - 27th, 2022

    (Greek god of the Northwind)

Foxglove Studio is a creative floral studio that uses fresh flowers as a medium of artistic expression. Boreas is a multimedia installation inspired by the symbolism of wind and the Greek God of the same name. Boreas personifies a brisk winter wind, bounding down from the snowy mountains and chilling the air with his glacial breath. Using the art of floral design to convey a message from the wind, this piece, which appears in space unexpectedly, can be interpreted as a symbol of moving spirit, the vital breath of the universe, or a gentle whisper from the gods. A breezy message of gentle transformation, serenity, and encouragement.

  • Cubes and balloons mixed together in a winter offering called SAMALAMIG. Its weekly variety, shape and structure pays tribute to the Filipino drink yet stands out as art.

SAMALAMIG is an eye-catching cold refreshment, boasting a variety of sweet flavors and milk based concoctions making it irresistible to foot traffic. The most important ingredient in this drink is ice! Hello winter! In casual conversations, one will tell a stressed out peer to have a SAMALAMIG to wind down, chill and relax.
