This summer, satisfy your cravings and your curiosity at the same time with Eat & Seek, a series of art installations and dining areas at Southcentre Mall and Kingsway Mall, open all summer long!

Eat & Seek is a collaborative concept with original artwork conceived by Calgary-based muralist and Alberta University of the Arts alum Nicole Wolf, and Edmonton creative Chris Provins. The unique outdoor dining spaces feature an interactive landscape of typography and shape that will encourage play and exploration for visitors of all ages. Vibrant designs and wordplay inspire visitors to hunt for hidden messages and symbols in a larger-than-life word search, attempt an unconventional hopscotch, and explore puddles of magnetic colour amidst a vast, mysterious grid. Artwork will begin outdoors and extend into the malls, visually leading visitors from the main entrance towards the food court. Eat & Seek is located in Calgary at Southcentre Mall, and in Edmonton at Kingsway Mall, as a joint effort aimed to bolster support for eateries in both cities.

Jayden Manzara

A creative soul, problem solver, and matcha enthusiast. Jayden Manzara is in her second year at Alberta University of the Arts with a major in Graphic Design. It was early on that she first realized that she wanted to pursue a career in this field. Always up for a challenge and eager for new opportunities to grow her design skills, she loves to collaborate and bring people together. She grew up a creative in more ways than one and has found a passion for visual communication.

Nicole Wolf

Nicole Wolf is a full-time artist. Her work explores the mysteries of human behaviour, untold narratives and unseen realities. She creates comics, paintings and public art out of a generally messy studio in downtown Calgary, Alberta.

Chris Provins

Since graduating from Industrial Design in 2007, Chris started off as a product designer. From there he became heavily involved in the branding and design side of things at Lift Interactive, whilst still keeping his feet wet in the design and manufacture of jewelry with his wife’s business Hunt Amor.

Currently Chris works as the Creative Director at Studio Bramble, a carpentry, millwork, and design studio in Edmonton Alberta. The Studio Bramble team has worked on interior design, custom furniture, product design, displays, signage and graphics for an impressive list of local businesses. Including Duchess Bakery, Made By Marcus, The Bower, Bar Brico, and Gravity Pope.

Submitted Works

Our latest public art initiative will also provide a unique opportunity for students from Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts) to showcase their work and gain exposure in a public-facing environment. In collaborating with AUArts, the malls invited six students to submit their own distinct designs for Eat & Seek, with guidance and mentorship from AUArts alumni. First-year student Jayden Manzara’s submission was selected to be displayed as part of the onsite installation at Southcentre & Kingsway, while the remaining five students’ designs can also be viewed below! All six students also received mentorship support from two AUArts alum throughout the submission process. Thanks to DeAnne Bedier and Shannon Hewlko for their invaluable guidance!

Amanda Mei Huynh (黄美仪)

Amanda Mei Huynh (黄美仪) does not limit her artistic expression to one certain style or medium. She is a Second Generation Canadian based in Calgary, Alberta and is currently in her second year working towards her Bachelor of Design at Alberta University of the Arts.

Amanda began going by MantisMei in mid-2020. The alias is a mash-up of her Western and Asian identities; Mantis is a nickname given to her by her friends that also represents a sophisticated power; Mei (美) is her middle name that she had never identified with prior, but is now reclaiming with new meaning. Mantis Mei is Amanda’s way of regaining control over her lost identity and her artistic practice.

Katrina Evangelista

Katrina Evangelista is freelance digital illustrator, currently working to get a BFA in communications design at Alberta University of the Arts situated in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Originally a painter, Katrina blended her interests of video games, movies, animations and artistic skills to create characters, environments, and typography. She loves to create colourful bold illustrations and tries to explore different mediums showcasing her artwork such as painting on fabric, shoes, canvases and many others.

Monica Ila

Monica Ila’s favourite thing is monsters. She is an emerging multidisciplinary artist from Calgary, AB, who is currently pursuing a BFA in Sculpture at the Alberta University of the Arts. Her visual art practice includes work in design, sculpture, painting, and puppetry. Monica creates her imaginary friends in 3D as giant life-sized sculptures and paints them within scenes of their own habitats. Playfulness is at the heart of everything she makes.

Her work has been exhibited at artsPlace Canmore, Pumphouse Theatre, Vertigo Theatre, Beakerhead, Calgary Public Library, YYC International Airport, Art Point Gallery, containR Gallery and through various local auctions and charity events. Monica believes that art is instrumental in bringing communities closer together and in rediscovering whimsy within our daily life.

Natalia Ionescu is an illustrator and graphic designer based in Calgary, AB. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Design at the Alberta University of the Arts, where she also works as a Student Ambassador. With a focus on communication design and visual development, Natalia’s illustrations explore a variety of stories, characters, and environments through a distinctly cute and playful visual approach. My name is Tully Huculak (she/her). I am currently a third-year student studying at Alberta University of the Arts (previously Alberta College of Art and Design). I am in the School of Visual Communications, where I am currently studying graphic design and advertising. I have experience in branding, typography, logos, advertising, web design, and packaging. My design education has attuned my eyes to layouts, logos, and typography. I am continually analyzing design fundamentals in the world around me, from C-Train advertisements to road signs.
